I’ve been there a few times, and I can tell you that if you know what places are not good for visiting, you’ll be okay. In general, I’m a huge fan of traveling, but now I prefer going to some calm places. I was in Florence a few weeks ago, had a great experience with florence food tour, and in general, it was the type of trip that I really needed.
I can tell you it’s actually safe, I don’t think you’ll be able to find dangerous places there if you’re a tourist.
