So I’m in a bit of a panic mode right now because I took my Q5 into a reputable garage in Al Quoz after noticing some harsh downshifts and they called me this morning saying the valve body is failing and the torque converter is showing signs of wear, and they’ve thrown a number at me that made my jaw hit the floor. I was expecting maybe 5 or 6 thousand dirhams but they’re talking about removing the whole unit, sending it to a specialist for rebuilding, new solenoids, fresh fluid, the works, and it’s adding up to nearly 12k all in. I’ve been doing some research online to see if I’m being overcharged and I found a really helpful post that gave a proper Audi transmission repair cost breakdown what to expect for different models and different types of failures, and it seems like for a ZF 8-speed with a valve body issue the price range is actually pretty wide depending on whether you go for a full rebuild or just replace the faulty parts. The thing is I don’t know enough about these gearboxes to challenge what they’re telling me, and I’m worried they might be pushing me towards the more expensive option when a simpler fix might do the job. Has anyone here had a similar repair done recently and can give me a ballpark figure of what they paid? I’m based in Dubai but honestly I’d drive to another emirate if it meant saving a few thousand on this job.
