If you’re new to slot seams, it’s a good idea to make a practice sample before trying this type of seam on your actual garment. Choose scraps of contrasting colors, and cut a strip of contrast fabric that is at least two times your seam allowance. Take tailor’s chalk or a water-soluble marking pen and mark a seam allowance line along the length of both the main pieces and the contrast piece of fabric. The seam will be sewn together with the main fabric, so it’s important to finish all of the edges, including the edges of the contrast fabric.
On the wrong side, press over the seam allowances of both main pieces and the contrasting piece. Press the contrast fabric in half to mark the middle.
